Regional Building Official

Come join our team! The Capitol Region Council of Governments is seeking qualified candidates to serve as a full time Regional Building Inspection and Code Enforcement Official.

Many CRCOG member communities have a need for building code officials on a temporary basis. The successful candidate will report to a manager at CRCOG and will receive daily assignments and direction from the designated officials in participating communities. The successful candidate will exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment within an assigned area of responsibility, and work is subject to evaluation based on performance.

This is a Full-Time, salaried position (35 hrs./week). The successful candidate will perform various aspects of the building inspection and code enforcement process for commercial and residential construction and other related duties as requested by participating communities.

The successful candidate will have a State of Connecticut Building Official or Assistant Building Official license and must maintain a valid CT Driver’s License. In addition, the successful candidate will have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent and a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in building inspection.

Desirable knowledge skills and abilities include:

  • Good knowledge, understanding, and application of Connecticut Building Code, planning and zoning, and land use; good knowledge of the quality and strength of building materials; good knowledge of fire prevention best practices practice; good knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, and concrete work; good knowledge of electrical and heating system installations; good knowledge of accepted requirements regarding light, ventilation, accessibility and egress.
  • Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; good ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, drawings and specifications; good ability to enforce codes and regulations with firmness and tact; good ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to inspect projects and installations in various stages of progress.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook), Internet, and permitting software.

Total Compensation

The salary range is $76,851-$117,390, dependent on experience and qualifications.

Eligible for mileage reimbursement as well as excellent benefits package, including health, disability, and life insurance, and a deferred compensation retirement plan.
