Central Avenue in Norwich, CT is used as a through street by many locals. Despite only having one lane in each direction, roads are wide and parking/shoulder areas are not marked, visually creating a fairly fast road on a route that features city transit, school buses, and a mix of homes, residences, and cultural destinations.
The team has worked with the Town of Norwich and SECCOG to conduct a site visit of the area, focusing on Central Avenue between 4th and 11th Streets to propose traffic calming measures along the street. If proven to be successful, these concepts can then later be extended by the Town along the rest of Central Ave.
Additionally, the team met with local stakeholders to discuss the road and potential traffic calming interventions.
From this information, the team developed conceptual improvements at 4th, 7th, 8th, and 11th Street intersections involving new “yield” sawtooth symbols in the road, new crosswalks, new shoulders demarcating parking areas at minimum but could include marks for parking spaces as well, the penitential for bike sharrow symbols to be included, additional signage, and most notably, painted bump outs. The community had enthusiastic response for including a variety of colors in these painted bump outs based on the wide variety of ethnic groups represented in the area (ex: Jamaican, Irish, Dominican, Russian, Polish, etc.).[/vc_column_text][vc_images_carousel images=”17324,17321,17323,17320″ img_size=”large” autoplay=”yes” wrap=”yes” title=”DRAFT concept plans for Central Avenue Traffic Calming Measures”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
