On November 15-16th, 2019, a two-day design workshop was held at the Easton EMS Building for the purpose of collecting public input on possible ways to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility along Sport Hill Road in Easton, CT, specifically the area between Silverman’s Farm and the Helen Keller Middle School.
In advance of the charrette, Facebook ads were used to promote the event and an online survey that was created for the project, which garnered more than 400 responses.
70% of respondents think safety is an issue within the study area.
On Friday, a walking site visit was conducted to assess existing conditions and the remainder of the day was focused on meeting with a wide variety of stakeholder focus groups (approximately 60 individuals representing middle school staff, planning commission members, property owners, town staff, and many more). The design team worked throughout the day to incorporate ideas and concerns into a series of draft concept plans for the corridor that depict possible changes to the road aimed at moderating traffic speeds and including safe and accessible pedestrian accommodations. Day two on Saturday continued to refine design concepts and an Open House for the public was held from 11-1:30pm.
The team is working to compile the information gathered as part of this project into a final document that the Town of Easton can refer to in the future.
